Listening Auntie’s Story from Community

From Suicide Survivor to Becoming An Active Listener

“I do not recall a day that I passed without being beaten or mentally tortured by my husband. It was during my 2nd pregnancy when we were divorced and I returned to my parents' house. The neighbors teased me and even blamed me saying that it was all my fault for the divorce. Before attempting suicide I cried out and said, ‘Why should I live?’Then I attempted suicide. Fortunately, I survived. The Mental Health Team reached out to me and brought me to one of the active listeners in my village. She lent me her ear and encouraged me. I am now working in a wig factory and living happily with my kids. Afterward, I received training and became an active listener to those who are mentally depressed in my community”.
