LAMB Hospital normally has one resident senior General Surgeon and at least one resident senior Gynaecologist.
Excluding surgery related to maternity, which is always available, surgery is normally elective, i.e, pre-arranged. Surgery is carried out during normal hospital day hours, Saturday to Thursday. Emergency surgery may be possible, but there is not always round the clock cover.
The main work carried out by the General Surgeon at LAMB is:
- Abdominal surgery
- Chest surgery
- Cleft lip/ cleft palate repairs
- Burn contracture (release and skin grafting, followed by use of pressure garments)
but a variety of other work is carried out including tumor removal, amputations, etc.
The Gynaecologist is largely involved with maternity work, but also carries out
- Obstetric fistula repairs
- Elective and emergency gynecologic procedures
Occasional ‘surgical camps’ add to LAMB’s capacity to carry out surgery. Typically once or twice per year there is a surgical camp for cleft lip/ cleft palate repairs. At such times, additional highly specialized surgical teams visit from overseas, or from Dhaka, typically for 1-2 weeks, and carry out a large number of repairs. These camps are sponsored by Operation Cleft, and so all patients receive free treatment.
Similarly, although obstetric fistula repairs are often done by the resident Senior Obstetrician/ Gynaecologist, the more difficult cases and greater numbers are occasionally done at a dedicated surgical camp, with a visiting consultant. Fistula repairs are sponsored by Engender Health, and so again, all patients receive free treatment.
